Introduction

April has been an exciting month at Alphaus as we continue to enhance Octo, your ultimate FinOps companion. This release sharpens operational efficiency, improves visibility into cloud spend, and adds more granular cost-allocation controls. From smarter filters to streamlined budget tools, these updates put your team in firmer command of every cloud dollar.

Effective cloud-financial management is more than tracking costs—it’s about reshaping how your organization thinks about and optimizes cloud resources. Let’s see what April brings.

Here are April’s Top Shelf Features

These April updates reflect our ongoing commitment to provide the features you need to make strategic decisions that drive business value.

Unit Cost Version 5

See our Globalization of Shared Resources

First on our list. Octo introduces a sweeping update to its unit and resource management module, bundled under Unit Cost (Version 5). It is now accessible outside of cost group management, providing users with easier and more flexible access to manage units at any time without the need to navigate through cost group work flows.

This enhancement is paired with Suggested Units—an intelligent recommender that scans your data and flags likely units you may want to track, then lets you accept, merge, or discard them on the spot. Existing units can also be merged more gracefully, so duplicate or overlapping items collapse into a single, tidy record.

Finally, the update extends Globalization of Shared Resources, allowing cloud teams to create shared-resource placeholders without pre-allocating usage. Together, these changes strip friction out of recurring tasks, shorten clicks, and give FinOps teams a smoother, more intuitive workspace.

From a customer standpoint, this enhancement delivers to two big wins:

  1. Faster access, less admin. Finance and engineering can edit units or shared resources directly— no more drilling through cost groups which results in cutting admin time and speeding month-end close.
  2. Tighter cost control. The Suggested Units engine spots missing or mistagged workloads, while the upgraded shared-resources flow lets teams park common costs now and allocate them later, helping prevent leakage and keeping budgets nimble.

Taken together, Version 5 transforms unit management from a maintenance chore into a strategic lever. By giving every stakeholder—FinOps analysts, engineers, and budget owners—faster navigation, cleaner data, and smarter recommendations, the feature sharpens visibility into cloud spend, improves the accuracy of chargeback or showback reports, and ultimately equips businesses to scale with confidence instead of surprises.

Group By Usage Type

The Cost Group—> Group By filter just got better. We’ve added Usage Type to our custom grouping in Octo’s Cost Group which enables users to break down and analyze cloud spending based on specific resource usage patterns. Users can now view costs grouped by how services are consumed, offering a more detailed and actionable perspective on cloud expenditure.

From a business standpoint, this enhancement helps your team spotlight the exact activities that drive spending and track how consumption patterns evolve. By regrouping expenses according to actual usage-type metrics, you can benchmark workloads, spot inefficiencies, and target savings with the greatest financial impact. The result is sharper forecasting, leaner operations, and far stronger control over every cloud dollar.

Unit Cost Version 6

Come take a look at Octo’s Cost Group Enhanced Visualization

Building on Octo’s Unit Cost Version 5, Unit Cost Version 6 is a major upgrade that delivers deeper cost insights through four interconnected improvements:

Change What it does
Unit Metrics Adds a new Unit Metrics panel that breaks product cost down to the finest unit. Shared resources are automatically apportioned so you can see each unit’s real impact.
Units → Custom Dimensions Renames Units to Custom Dimensions to signal that you can slice shared costs by any meaningful business dimension, while keeping all existing auto-suggest, merge, and global-access features.
Faster Cost-Group Setup When you create a cost group you can now add its unit metric in the same step—no extra clicks or back-and-forth screens.
Richer Visuals Unit metrics are baked into cost-group charts, letting you view spend and its key driver side-by-side for “aha!” clarity.

From customer/ business standpoint, these enhancements delivers you:

  • Crystal-clear cost drivers. See exactly which unit or shared resource is pushing up spend, so root-cause hunting takes minutes, not days.
  • Sharper decisions. Finance can fine-tune pricing, product teams can right-size architecture, and leadership gets hard numbers for ROI and margin talks.
  • One-click workflow. Quicker cost-group creation removes busywork and speeds time to insight.
  • Continuous optimization. Live charts that pair cost with unit metrics expose waste and performance trends early, turning reactive clean-ups into proactive savings.

CSP Management Version 3

Take a look at these cards!

Finally, Octo now gives each billing (parent) account its own clickable card. When users open a card, they can:

  • View full account details at a glance.
  • See all linked sub-accounts in one list.
  • Register any unregistered accounts that Octo has discovered—either manually in the console or instantly with the Register Account button if the StackSet is already in place.

These changes fix two pain points in the earlier version:

  1. Clear account names. Account naming is now required, so identical or blank names can’t cause confusion.
  2. Guided sub-account setup. The workflow steers users to add sub-accounts right away, ensuring that the entire billing hierarchy is captured in Octo.

This feature delivers the following customer and business values:

  1. Faster Onboarding: Easy registration and a guided flow that cuts the time it takes to bring new accounts into Octo.
  2. Error-free visibility: Mandatory names and sub-accounts prompts stop mis-tagged or missing accounts from skewing reports.
  3. Stronger governance: Finance and DevOps teams get an accurate, up-to-date picture of every billing relationship, leading to better cost allocation and compliance.
  4. Reduced support load: Clearer UI and self-service registration mean fewer tickets and smoother user experience.
